Thanks to some cogent suggestions from Declan Sciolla-Lynch, yes, the standard Notes 8.5 installer can work on a non-Apple-produced machine running OSX. Just have to hack out the part of InstallationCheck that looks for Intel chips. The logic in there is bass-ackwards anyway... it should specifically check for PowerPC and run unless it finds it, rather than assuming that anything that doesn't register perfectly as an Intel is a PPC.
Now that Ed Brill is full-time on an Apple, these sorts of things will go away.
